The Seventh New Zealand Sikh Games were held with great enthusiasm and community pride on the 29th and 30th of November 2025 at Bruce Pullman Park, Takanini. The annual event, now a significant part of the Sikh and wider South Asian sporting calendar in New Zealand, showcased athletic excellence, cultural strength, and unity among participants and spectators from across the country.

Organised by the NZ Sikh Games Committee, the event received full support from the Management Committee of Gurudwara Sri Dashmesh Darbar, Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe. Their collaboration ensured smooth execution, high participation, and a welcoming environment for families, athletes, and dignitaries.

A major highlight o

f the Games was the official inauguration by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Christopher Luxon, on 29th November 2025 at 3:00 PM. In his keynote address, the Prime Minister congratulated the organisers for their commitment to promoting sportsmanship and fostering community engagement. He commended the Sikh community’s contributions to New Zealand’s multicultural landscape and praised the spirit of unity reflected at the event.He also spoke of the growing relationship between New Zealand and India, acknowledging the deep cultural and economic ties shared by both nations.

The opening ceremony featured a vibrant parade, capturing the rich heritage of the Sikh community. Spectators were treated to a spectacular Gatka (Sikh martial art) performance, dynamic Bhangra dancing, and an energetic band display, all held in front of the Prime Minister. These cultural showcases added colour and excitement to the ceremony, symbolising the unique blend of sports and tradition that defines the NZ Sikh Games.

 

Prithi Pal Singh Basra, Chairperson of Gurudwara Sri Dashmesh Darbar, also addressed the gathering. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to the volunteer teams, sponsors, participating sports clubs, and the broader Sikh community for their unwavering support. He highlighted the importance of events like the Sikh Games in strengthening youth participation in sports, promoting physical wellbeing, and preserving cultural identity for future generations.
The two-day event featured competitions across various sports, reflecting the diversity of talent within the community. Families and spectators enjoyed not only the sporting competitions but also food stalls, cultural exhibits, and social interactions that fostered a strong sense of togetherness. The Seventh NZ Sikh Games successfully blended athletic skill with cultural pride, further establishing the event as a cornerstone of community life. It stood as a testament to the Sikh community’s dedication to promoting unity, sportsmanship, and cultural vibrancy, values that continue to enrich New Zealand’s multicultural society.
