India’s No. 1 ranked professional boxer Chandni Mehra, who fought for a world title against New Zealand’s Mea Motu in December 2023 and narrowly lost on points, has now been signed by New Zealand–based promoter Craig Thompson. Under this new partnership, Chandni will train and be managed by renowned boxing coach Farmaan Ali.

Craig Thompson, who has organised more than 100 boxing promotions across New Zealand and played a key role in guiding several fighters to the world stage, expressed confidence in Chandni’s potential. He said this collaboration offers a tremendous opportunity to help Chandni become India’s first-ever professional boxing world champion.
Farmaan Ali, who has successfully trained champions both in Fiji and New Zealand, noted that professional boxing in India is still developing but holds immense promise. “It just needs someone to break through as a world champion and lead the way,” he said. “Despite limited resources, Chandni performed exceptionally well in her 2023 world title attempt and went the distance against the very dangerous Mea Motu.”
Farmaan added that he and Craig are committed to helping Chandni make history. “This will be a proud moment for both our countries. Chandni will have access to every resource she needs here in New Zealand to become a world champion. She will be training and competing out of New Zealand moving forward.”

The team is also welcoming support from the Indian community in New Zealand. Chandni, who has a strong fan base on social media, offers excellent promotional value for potential sponsors. Those interested in sponsorship opportunities can contact 022 457 5210.-TIN Bureau
