Waitakere Ethnic Board, in collaboration with the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and the New Zealand Government’s Auckland Policy Office, is proud to announce the release of the Minority Ethnic Communities Economic Contribution Report 2025.
This landmark report reveals that Ethnic Minority Communities contribute $87 billion to Aotearoa New Zealand’s economy, reflecting their significant and growing role in the nation’s economic landscape.
The updated figures are based on 2023 data and demonstrate a remarkable increase from the findings of the first report, independently commissioned by the Waitakere Ethnic Board four years ago, which identified a $64 billion contribution at that time.
The new report highlights the expanding economic strength, entrepreneurial activity, workforce participation, and diverse skillsets reflected across Ethnic Minority Communities throughout New Zealand. The findings reinforce the essential role these communities play in shaping the country’s prosperity and future growth.
Why This Matters
Understanding the economic contribution of Ethnic Minority Communities is essential for evidence-based policymaking, improved resource allocation, and recognising the vital role these communities play in New Zealand’s long-term growth. This report provides agencies, funders, and policymakers with robust data to inform future planning, investment, and community development strategies.
