The Sakhi women’s group continues to bring joy, energy, and connection to migrant women through its supportive initiatives. Founded in 2017, Sakhi (meaning friend) has grown from just seven women into a strong, diverse community. It is led by Jyoti Parashar and Lavanya Komal, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who help make each activity successful.

The idea of hosting badminton as a physical activity for the Sakhi team was the brainchild of Lavanya, and the sessions have been very well received. The group recently hosted its third Sakhi Social Badminton session of the year, which was once again highly popular, with growing demand to hold it more frequently. The sessions have been running smoothly under the coordination of Shilpy Sabarwal, who ensures a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all participants.

Shilpy shared, “We had a great hit with our rackets last weekend with a record number of enthusiastic women from all over Auckland. We fulfilled our purpose of fitness whilst socialising through this recreational sport. Looking forward to more badmintonists joining our group.”
These gatherings provide a safe and supportive space for women, especially new migrants, to play, socialise, and relax, while also promoting physical and emotional well-being. With the entire badminton court reserved exclusively for Sakhi, participants can enjoy the game freely, without hesitation or any barriers.

The group connects through a WhatsApp group and a Facebook page, where members share updates, resources, and encouragement. Activities like the badminton sessions help build a sense of belonging, especially for those new to the country and still finding their social circle. Sakhi also provides a platform for women to promote their small businesses, share opportunities, and support each other in every possible way — truly reflecting the spirit of friendship and empowerment.
Reflecting on Sakhi’s journey, Jyoti Parashar shared,
“I have been voluntarily running this group since 2017, along with amazing volunteers. It’s heartening to see how Sakhi has become a safe and supportive space for women to connect, grow, and support one another. The success of our badminton sessions shows how small initiatives can make a big difference.”
