Disha NZ Trust recently hosted an informative presentation by Elisa Moller, Community Stroke Navigator from Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand, at both Balmoral and New Lynn Community Centres. The sessions were specifically tailored for Disha NZ seniors, focusing on stroke awareness, prevention, and the support available for those affected by strokes.
Elisa explained what a stroke is, its different types, and the common risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and lifestyle choices. She emphasized the importance of early detection, highlighting the F.A.S.T warning signs—Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services. The presentation also offered practical advice on adopting heart-healthy habits, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, stress management, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol consumption.
Attendees were encouraged to actively engage during the sessions, asking questions and sharing personal experiences. Elisa also detailed the range of support services available for stroke survivors and their families, from rehabilitation programs to community resources that help individuals regain independence and improve their quality of life. The seniors appreciated the clarity of the presentation and found the practical tips highly useful for both prevention and post-stroke care.

In addition to health awareness, Disha NZ is thrilled to announce its upcoming Diwali Celebrations, organized in collaboration with Whau Ethnic Collective and New Lynn Hub Team, on Saturday, 4th October, at the New Lynn Community Centre. Diwali, the festival of lights, is a celebration of joy, prosperity, and cultural heritage. The event promises a vibrant program of cultural performances, music, dance, delicious traditional foods, and engaging activities suitable for all ages.
Disha NZ warmly invites everyone from the community to join the festivities, share in the spirit of togetherness, and experience the warmth and energy that make these events so special. Whether you are celebrating Diwali for the first time or have cherished the tradition for years, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
These events reflect Disha NZ’s ongoing commitment to promoting community wellbeing, health awareness, and cultural connection. By bringing people together through education and celebration, Disha NZ continues to create a supportive, inclusive, and engaging environment for seniors and the wider community.
All are welcome—come, learn, celebrate, and connect!
