Sakhi (meaning friend) has been a safe and welcoming space for women, especially new migrants, to connect, share resources, and support one another since 2017. What began as a small women’s group has now grown into a strong platform for empowerment, cultural celebration, and community building. Over the years, Sakhi has organised a wide range of activities, from information sessions to cultural events, always with the purpose of uplifting women and creating stronger, more connected communities.

Recently, Sakhi held its second Social Badminton event, which was very well received and brought together women and families from diverse backgrounds. Building on this success, Sakhi plans to run badminton sessions 3 to 4 times a year, providing women with regular opportunities to stay active, connect socially, and build friendships in a fun and supportive environment. More than just promoting health and wellbeing, these events create a true sense of belonging and demonstrate how simple activities can foster meaningful community connections.
Now, Sakhi is gearing up for another exciting initiative—the Whau Ethnic Family Market Day, happening on Sunday, 31st August 2025, at the New Lynn Community Centre. The event promises a vibrant mix of cultural performances, food stalls, music, community activities, and a special Fashion Show celebrating creativity, heritage, and diversity. Visitors will also enjoy browsing handcrafted goods, tasting delicious vegetarian food, and connecting with people from across different cultures.

What makes Sakhi truly special is that all its activities are proudly led by volunteers who are passionate about creating positive change. Their commitment ensures that every initiative is meaningful, inclusive, and driven by community spirit. The Ethnic Family Market Day is no exception—it has been planned with care and heart to offer something for everyone in the family.
At its heart, the Market Day is about supporting small and home-based businesses, many of which are run by women taking their first steps in entrepreneurship. By attending, you’re not just enjoying a fun family day out—you’re also encouraging local talent and helping small businesses grow.
This event is made possible with the generous support of the Whau Local Board, Whau Ethnic Collective, and the New Lynn Hub Team, who share Sakhi’s vision of fostering inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.
Date: Sunday, 31st August 2025
Venue: New Lynn Community Centre, 45 Totara Avenue

Team Sakhi appeals to Join the Sakhi Whau Ethnic Family Market Day – a celebration of diversity, small businesses, and the bonds that bring communities together.
