A new visa pathway aimed at attracting international business investors was unveiled on Wednesday, offering a streamlined route to residency in exchange for investing in established businesses.
Under the new Business Investor Visa, foreign investors may qualify for New Zealand residency after just 12 months if they purchase an existing business, invest at least $2 million, and hire at least one additional full-time employee. Alternatively, a $1 million investment could also lead to residency, but only after three years.
To be eligible, the business being acquired must be over five years old, financially stable, and already employing a minimum of five full-time staff. Applicants must also demonstrate business experience and meet English language proficiency standards.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford described the new visa as a more clearly defined and targeted alternative to the Entrepreneur Visa it replaces. “This new visa will bring overseas investment to maintain and create jobs, grow incomes, and breathe new life into existing businesses across the country,” she said. “We are introducing a more targeted pathway for experienced businesspeople with capital to invest and the hands-on experience and skills needed to run a successful business.”
The Business Investor Visa is separate from the Active Investor Plus Visa, introduced earlier in the year, which requires an investment of between $5 million and $10 million.
Stanford noted that the Entrepreneur Visa had suffered from low application numbers, high rejection rates, and limited economic benefits. Critics often pointed to the previous scheme’s vague requirements, which discouraged potential investors concerned about financial risk and uncertain residency outcomes.
She also revealed that work is underway on a dedicated startup visa for entrepreneurs with innovative, scalable business ideas, aimed at complementing the current visa offerings.-TIN Bureau
