In his acceptance speech on Friday, Joseph expressed heartfelt gratitude: “I am humbled by the trust you all have placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with it. I will work hard for everyone in Ashford, Hawkinge, and the surrounding villages.”

Joseph’s journey to Parliament is marked by a strong foundation in community service and public health. As a local councillor and BAME (Black, Asian, and minority ethnic) Officer, he has been preparing for this role for years. His two-decade career with the NHS as a mental health nurse has provided him with the empathy and understanding crucial for effective representation in Parliament.

Having lived in the Ashford community with his wife and three children for over 15 years, Joseph’s deep connection to the area is evident. “I take great pride in calling Ashford and Willesborough my home. I have participated in numerous fundraising activities over the years, including running marathons for various charities and a dragon boat race for the local hospital charity,” he shared. Joseph has also completed several international marathons for charitable causes, further showcasing his commitment to community and charity work.

“I firmly believe in an inclusive society that works towards achieving the full potential of every individual in the community,” Joseph added, underscoring his vision for a cohesive and supportive society.

Joseph’s educational background is equally impressive. He completed his schooling in Kottayam and pursued nursing studies at B R Ambedkar Medical College in Bengaluru. In the UK, he earned a Master’s degree in healthcare leadership, focusing on diversity and inclusion in public healthcare. On the campaign trail, many voters praised his passion for improving access to both mental and physical healthcare services for all.

Next week, Joseph will join several other first-time Labour MPs of Indian heritage in the Commons, reflecting a significant nationwide swing towards the Labour Party following their landslide victory under the leadership of Keir Starmer.
