Results of recently concluded Indian elections are now out and the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party, despite of emerging as the single largest party, would struggle to run the government since they do not have a clear majority of their own. Though BJP government has a history of taking all coalition partners with them, even when in previous two terms they didn’t require their support but now they will need coalition partners support all the time. This will be very precarious situation for Narendra Modi who is used to of surprising people with his tough and bold decisions. India has seen Modi working tirelessly 24×7 without taking a break just for the good of its people and the country, now may not have the same freedom to exercise any decision without his partners consenting with him.
India should be the only country in the world where people may still not vote the government that has done everything possible for their good. It will be hard to find a second example of how people can be so ungrateful that instead of supporting overwhelmingly to such a government, they chose the parties of dynasts and corrupts. These results should be an eye opener for Narendra Modi and the people around him. There will a lot of contemplation and churning to find the reasons of this debacle of BJP but after all this exercise BJP will need to completely change its modus operandi going forward if they want to remain relevant. Today world can’t be run by harsh discipline or idealism, people are not used to of abiding by rules all the time. A little bit of lethargy and hypocrisy, a bit of corruption to get things done or favouritism is acceptable norm today. Modi’s slogan of ‘na khaoonga na khane doonga’ has made millions of people his enemy especially the political parties and its leaders. These people were not happy with Modi since he didn’t allow them to do any corruption or favours, even to the people from his own party. These inside enemies do more damage than any outside opponents and this is what exactly has happened with BJP.
Narendra Modi had very ambitious plans for his third term and was set to take tough decisions that he already announced. Now only time will tell how he will execute those plans or bring all the changes and reforms which could take India to newer heights. The results are also a setback for Modi personally as his image of tough world leader will take a nosedive and India may not assert its stand on world stage as firmly as it had been for past ten years.
The outcome of these elections will also bring back the era of coalition governments in India which ended since Modi came to power in 2014. These results also expose the overdependence of BJP over Narendra Modi since a chunk of the seats won by the party are due to his personal charisma. The second line of leadership is not even close to the aura or charisma of Narendra Modi, most BJP leaders lack the mass appeal of Narendra Modi. All these points make situation of the country very vulnerable and the India’s opportunist enemies will be ready to jump at any of such weak cracks. Why Modi government reached to this situation will be a subject of research and scrutiny both for political pundits and the party alike.
Going forward if this government still wants to fulfil its aspirations and achieve their tough goals, they certainly will need to adapt the tricks of their opponents. Narendra Modi will need to be ruthless in his approach without showing any mercy towards anyone. He has nothing to lose now, if this is what people gave him back after all his devotion and hard for 10 years to make India a world power, he shouldn’t be bothered for the consequences. If even after building Ram Mandir at Ayodhya after 500 years long battle, he still loses that seat due to the naïve and ungrateful voters, then his only motto should be making India an indispensable country before he quits. -Yugal Parashar
