Disha NZ works under the aegis of New Zealand’s oldest Hindu temple Bharatiya Mandir in Sandringham, Auckland that runs and supports many such community activities in the area.
Disha NZ and Bharatiya Mandir Balmoral recently came together to create a unique and unforgettable Intergenerational Art Program with the enchanting theme: Art Under the Water. Supported by the Albert Eden Local Board, this event brought together participants of all ages to dive into the wonders of underwater creativity.
The theme, Art Under the Water, inspired a wide range of artistic activities. Participants, guided by talented artists from The ReCreators, explored the beauty and mystery of the ocean through their art. From colourful sea creatures to serene underwater landscapes, everyone had the chance to express their creativity and imagination.
The event was more than just an art workshop; it was a delightful experience for all senses. Attendees enjoyed delicious food, adding to the day’s enjoyment, and fostering a sense of community. One ten-year-old child summed up the excitement perfectly, exclaiming, “This is the best day of my life!”
The positive feedback was overwhelming. One parent even requested that similar events be held every second month, highlighting how much these intergenerational activities mean to the community. Bringing children and elders together through art not only created beautiful works but also built meaningful connections across generations.
The success of the Art Under the Water theme showed the power of creativity to unite people. By engaging in shared artistic activities, participants formed bonds that transcended age, discovering the joy and value of learning from one another.

This collaborative effort by Disha NZ and Bharatiya Mandir Balmoral, supported by the Albert Eden Local Board, serves as a wonderful example of how art can bring a community together both young and old. It reminds us of the importance of creating spaces where different generations can connect, share, and create lasting memories. Many participants expressed their desire to look forward to more such events that celebrate creativity and community spirit. -TIN Bureau
