As of today, passengers passing through international security screening at Auckland Airport can now leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags, thanks to the introduction of innovative new technology.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown heralded this change as a significant step towards a more efficient and seamless travel experience. He emphasized that this technology will not only benefit passengers but also enhance security measures across New Zealand’s airports.

The new computed tomography (CT) scanning machines, deployed at Auckland Airport’s international screening points, mark a significant upgrade in security capabilities. These machines utilize advanced imaging technology to generate real-time 3D images of carry-on bags, enabling security personnel to make more accurate assessments of their contents.

Minister Brown further revealed plans to expand the use of CT scanners to domestic airports nationwide by December. This expansion aims to alleviate congestion at security checkpoints and expedite the boarding process for travelers.

Despite the introduction of this new technology, the existing 100ml volume limit for liquids, aerosols, and gels carried on international flights remains unchanged.

It’s worth noting that passengers departing from Wellington and Christchurch have been enjoying the convenience of leaving laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags since late last year. This initial rollout has been met with positive feedback, further underscoring the benefits of embracing technological advancements in airport security
