ABC News reported that Israeli missiles targeted a site in Iran, citing a U.S. official, while Iranian state media indicated an explosion in the central part of the country. This incident occurred days after Iran launched a retaliatory drone strike against Israel.

While Reuters has not confirmed these reports, Iran’s Fars news agency stated that an explosion was heard at an airport in Isfahan, a city in central Iran. The cause of the explosion remains unknown. As a precautionary measure, Iran suspended flights over Isfahan, Shiraz, and Tehran.

Notably, Isfahan province hosts several Iranian nuclear facilities, including Natanz, which is a crucial site for Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

In response to Iran’s recent drone and missile attacks over the weekend, Israel had previously warned Iran of consequences. Israel managed to intercept most of the Iranian drones and missiles before they reached Israeli territory.

Following the reports of the Israeli strike, oil prices surged, with Brent crude futures rising by 2% to $88.86 a barrel. Additionally, the dollar gained broadly, while gold prices increased by 1% and S&P 500 futures dropped by 1%.

The situation has escalated concerns among analysts and observers about the potential spread of conflict beyond the Israel-Gaza region. Iran has urged the United Nations Security Council to compel Israel to cease further military actions against its interests, emphasizing the region’s precarious state.

It’s worth noting that Israel’s military offensive against Gaza was initiated after Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group, launched attacks on Israel, resulting in casualties on both sides. Amid the conflict, Iran-backed groups from Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq have expressed solidarity with Palestinians by launching attacks.
