Disha NZ, an Auckland based charitable organization for community members, is dedicated to enhancing the lives of seniors through various community programs. DISHA NZ runs weekly programs for community seniors at Balmoral and at New Lynn community centres. DISHA NZ organized a workshop aimed at educating their members on the proper methods of recycling food scraps. This event was held at the Balmoral Community Centre located in Sandringham on Wednesday, April 10th.
The workshop served as a platform for members to learn about the importance of responsible waste management, particularly concerning food scraps. Representatives from Auckland Council Wei Pudney, Community Engagement Coordinator was present to provide valuable insights and guidelines on effectively utilizing recycling and waste bins. During the workshop, attendees received comprehensive information on the appropriate disposal of food scraps through pictures and placards. They were educated on the types of food waste that can be composted or recycled and the methods for doing so efficiently. Practical demonstrations were conducted to illustrate the correct procedures for sorting waste and utilizing the designated bins effectively.
The workshop emphasized the environmental and community benefits of proper waste management practices. By recycling food scraps appropriately, participants were informed about the positive impact on reducing landfill waste and minimizing environmental pollution. Additionally, they learned how their individual actions contribute to the broader goal of sustainability and conservation.
The presence of Auckland Council representative added credibility to the workshop, as they provided authoritative guidance based on municipal waste management policies and regulations. Members had the opportunity to interact directly with the Council official, posing questions and clarifying doubts regarding waste disposal practices.
