Ambedkar Sports and Cultural Club (Inc.) and the High Commission on India in NZ jointly celebrated the 131st birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar on 17th April 2022 at Sri Guru Ravidas Temple in Bombay Hills, Auckland.

Dr Ambedkar was modern India’s one of the most radical thinkers who transformed the social and political landscape in the struggle against British colonialism and helped frame the Constitution of India. He had also served as the Law and Justice Minister in the first cabinet of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Honorary Consul of India, Mr Bhav Dhillon graced the auspicious occasion with his presence. He assured the committee members and the wider community that the Government of India is committed to providing any form of support needed. 

Mr Kharag Singh, a well-known businessman and popular community leader also took part in the celebrations. The programme started with Shabad Kirtan and langar was served to all attendees at the end of the programme. A special documentary, highlighting Dr Ambedkar’s achievements and contributions to the development of modern India was also played on the big screen.

The present committee members Sanjeev Toora (President), Ravi Jhamat (Vice President) and Jaswinder Sandhu (General secretary) thanked the community for their support in organising the event. -TIN bureau
