In appreciation of its efforts for helping the Muslim community after the Christchurch terror attacks early this year, as well as for their ongoing efforts to spread peace and love among communities, the Pakistan Association of New Zealand, was especially acknowledged at the third annual Kiwi Punjabi Awards held last weekend. The awards are given every year by the New Zealand Punjabi Multimedia Trust, and hosted by Radio Spice.
The event was dedicated to Guru Nanak’s 550th Prakash Parv, and also saw the release of a special stamp to mark the occasion. Minister of Ethnic Communities, Jenny Salesa, Pakistan High Commissioner to New Zealand Abdul Malik, and Honorary Consulate of India in Auckland Bhavdeep Dhillon were in attendance.

Main Awards
Honorary Punjabi: presented to Arwinder Kaur, as she is Tongan born girl married to a Punjabi boy and has adopted Punjabi culture and traditions beautifully.
Community Award: presented to Avtar Taraksheel for his ongoing community work, supporting various organisations and helping new comers by sharing his expertise.
Woman of the year award: presented to Mandeep Kaur Sidhu (first Punjabi born female police officer) for her excellent guidance and support to the whole community throughout the year.
Art and Culture Award: Satta Vairowalia (great lyricist and singer) for his awesome progress in the Punjabi music industry and making it to the movies being released at international levels and gaining popularity.
Organisation of the Year Award: Bay of Plenty Sports and Cultural Club Tauranga to honour their efforts to promote sports and culture throughout the year.
Special Acknowledgement Awards
• Marshal Walia – for his active volunteer work in the wider community
• Pinky Lal – first female Punjabi Ambulance Officer in the South Island
